Selected Specimens
| HOWLITE, Iona, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia ,Canada |
Here are some exemplary specimens of howlite. Everybody has seen the nodules of howlite that are fairly common from different places in the world. These specimens are different in that all have excellent clusters of terminated crystals! This is really the only place in the world that produces large crystals of howlite- the best in the world. There is a locality in California that produces micro crystals of a substantially different habit. All of these specimens look great and have a number of great crystals. They occur on the shore of Bras Dor Lake on Cape Breton Island, embedded in extremely hard anhydrite. As the waves of the lake lap against the boulders sitting in the water, the anhydrite turns to gypsum and the howlite crystals are exposed as the waves wash away the gypsum!!! Fantastic but true! |
